Symphony Orchestra Annual RetreatSymphony Retreat 2007 Photo Album
WHERE IS IT? The University of California, Santa Cruz, overlooks the Monterey Bay from its hillside location on 2,000 acres of meadows and redwood forests, 75 miles south of San Francisco. The newly completed Music Center includes specially equipped classrooms, individual practice and teaching studios, and large rehearsal space for ensembles. The students are housed in the residence halls, located a short walking distance from the Music Center.
WHO IS GOING? The August retreat is mandatory for ALL members of the ECYS Symphony and the El Camino Flute Ensemble. Accompanying the students will be parent chaperones, Symphony Conductor Camilla Kolchinsky, Areon Flutes (Flute Ensemble Conductors), a coach for each Symphony Orchestra section, Executive Director Cathy Spieth, and the ECYS Orchestra Manager.
WHAT HAPPENS THERE? Rehearsal/sectionals each morning, afternoon and evening, with an early afternoon lunch and recreational break. The retreat is an opportunity to get acquainted with the conductor and coaches, fellow musicians, and to begin intensive work on the program for the coming season.
Mid-week the entire Symphony takes an afternoon off to visit the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, a time to enjoy the sun, beach and fun with friends.

“ECYS is a high level orchestra yet the members are so chill that you won't feel uncomfortable.” – Sam Lee, Symphony French Horn “ECYS was the first orchestra that I truly loved. I felt, for the first time in my life, compelled to play the pieces.” – Jessica Ryou, Symphony Violin |
